Vadodra is known for
its palaces, museums and parks. The Sayaji Bagh is a big
well-laid park and an important tourist attraction. Within
this park, one can see the Baroda Museum and Art Gallery. The
Museum has a good collection of artifacts, which not only
includes Indian sculptures and ancient manuscripts, but also
houses collection of Egyptian antiquities, while the art
gallery has Mughal miniatures and some works of European
masters. The Sayaji Bagh also has a planetarium and a small
zoo within it. Maharaj Fateh Singh Museum, located in the
southern part of the city, is an important tourist spot. It
houses the royal collection of copies of European masters.
This museum also has a good collection of Far Eastern Art and
contemporary Indian works. The Laxmi Vilas Palace, north of
the Maharaj Fateh Singh Museum, has a good collection of
artifacts. As this museum is not generally open for public
viewing, advance booking has to be made to visit it. The
Naulakhi Well, a fine example of a step well or baoli, and the
EME temple, a unique temple with an aluminum roof, are worth
paying a visit.

Dhumkal - This is a sloth bear
sanctuary, which also houses the tiger and leopard.
» Kirti Mandir -
Kirti MandirThis is a majestic monumental building also known
as Temple of Flame, built in 1936 by Maharaja Sayaji Rao to
perpetuate the glorious memory of his beloved ancestors. It is
the family vault of the Gaekwad rulers.
» Maharaja Fateh Singh Museum
- Located in the southern part of the city, this is an
important tourist spot, housing the royal collection of copies
of European masters. It also has a good collection of Far
Eastern Art and contemporary Indian works.
» Makarpura Palace -
This is a beautiful palace designed in the Italianate
style, which is presently used as a training school of the
Indian Air Force.
» Nazarbagh Palace -
Situated in the old walled city near Mandvi Clock Tower,
it is one of the oldest palaces built in old classic style by
Malhar Rao Gaekwad in the late 19th century. This palace was
used during royal ceremonial occasions.
» Pratap Vilas Palace
- At LalbagBuilt as the residence of the royal family, the
Pratap Vilas is an extravagant and flamboyant building in the
Indo-Saracenic style, having a remarkable collection of old
armoury and sculptures in bronze, marble and terra cotta. It
is now the main training centre of the Indian Railways.
» Vadodara Museum and Picture Gallery
- Founded by the Gaekwads in 1894 AD, this
museum has an impressive collection on art and archaeology,
natural history, geology and ethnology. It has a good
collection of artifacts, including Indian sculptures, ancient
manuscripts and Egyptian antiquities.
