Cherrapunjee
Cherrapunjee or Sohra, as it is known locally, used to be the
wettest place on earth. That title has now passed to Mawsynram.
The natural beauty of Cherrapunjee includes gushing waterfalls
and deep gorges. Near the town are several breathtaking
waterfalls - Nohsngithiang Falls (Mawsmai Falls), Dainthlen
Falls, and Nohkalikai Falls (the world's fourth highest). Most
tourists come to the area for the falls.
Dainthlen Falls has magnificent rock formations and has become
a popular picnic spot. The Nohkalikai Falls are considered the
most spectacular in Meghalaya. They are at the most deafening
and glorious after the monsoon. The best time to visit is from
mid May to October.
Jaintia Hills
Jaintia Hills is the home of the Jaintia tribe and offers some
of the most stunning natural sights in Meghalaya. The green
surroundings, high plateaus, deep valleys, rambling rivers,
and cascading waterfalls are feast for the eyes.
Nartiang in the Jaintia Hills is the site of a collection of
giant Monoliths, some are among the tallest in the world. An
ancient thatched Durga Temple was once used for human
sacrifice.
Garo Hills is noted for the abundant wildlife, which attracts
naturalists and photographers. There are two mountain ranges,
the Arabella range and the Tura range, that pass through the
Garo Hills providing an amazing landscape.
Shillong
Shillong is the capital of Meghalaya except between 1864 and
1972, when Meghalaya was formed - Shilong was the capital of
British Assam.
The Khasi, Jaintia and Garo hill tribes provide a colorful
glimpse into their lifestyle and cultural traditions. Visitors
are also attracted to Shillong for its natural beauty, parks,
waterfalls and the spectacular views. The Shillong Peak
provides a breathtaking view of Shillong, worship of the local
deity Shyllong or Lei Shyllong takes place at the peak.
The atmosphere of Shillong is a typical modern Indian town
with the British influences found in the championship golf
course, polo ground and Victorian bungalows.
Umiam Lake
Umiam Lake is located at the village of Barapani. The lake was
created as part of a hydroelectric project and provides hours
of fun and relaxation opportunities.
Umiam Lake is an angler's paradise with a large variety of
fish found in the water. Water sports and boating are also
popular.
The climate in the area is perfect for growing exotic flowers
such as orchids. Nearby Lum Nehru Park has an aviary and
orchidarium.
