The word Ayurveda
consists of two Sanskrit terms - Ayu meaning life and Veda
meaning knowledge. Thus Ayurveda means the knowledge of life
or science of life. It is defined as the science, through
which one can obtain knowledge about the useful and harmful
ways of life, happy and miserable types of life and conditions
that lead to the above types of life, as well as, the very
nature of life. This unique system of medication originated in
India about 6000 years ago.
Kerala Ayurveda
Kerala's temperate climate, rich flora (with a wealth of herbs
and medicinal plants), and the cool monsoon season (June -
November) are best suited for Ayurveda's curative and renewing
packages. In fact, today, Kerala is the only State in India
which practices Ayurveda with absolute dedication.
The Basic Principles of Ayurveda
Ayurveda follows the principle 'You are what you eat'.
Emphasis is given to the food habits and life style. Natural
herbs are widely used as medicines. In fundamental principles
of Ayurveda 5 basic elements are very important. The universe,
and anything in the universe is believed to be made of these 5
elements which are air, water, earth, fire and space. Quality
and nature of everything varies according to the difference in
the proportion of these elements each plant or each mineral
exhibits its own physical and chemical characters. This basic
principle is made use of in the formulation of medicines in
Ayurveda.
