Dharmasthala
This place is of religious interest in the interiors
of Dakshina Kannada. An outstanding example of religious and
cultural tolerance where charity is a way of life, extended to
all without discrimination. Lord Manjunatha temple is a famous
pilgrim center. It is situated in the village of Dharmasthala
, in Beltangady Taluk of South Canara district.
Gokarna
Gokarna situated in coastal Karnataka is 453 kms from
Bangalore is about 55 kms from Karwar, the District
headquarters. It is described as a Shaiva Centre, as important
as Kashi and Rameshwar. History has it that the Atmalinga
brought by Ravana got struck here and his efforts to extricate
it resulted in his throwing the coverings of the Linga to
Dhareshwar, Gunavanteshwara, Murdeshwar and Shejjeshwar
temples (the last places is very near Karwar).
Katil
Katil is another place of Religious significance. Katil is 27
kms east, on the banks of the river Nandini. It has a famous
temple dedicated to Durga Parameshwari.
Kollur
Kollur is one of the most important places of pilgrimage in
Karnataka is in the distance of 128 Kms from Mangalore. The
temple here is dedicated to Mookambika and stands on a spur of
the Kodachadri peak. The Goddess Mookambika is in the form of
Jyotir-Linga incorporating both Shiva and Shakthi. The
Panchaloha image (five element mixed metal) of the Goddess on
Shree Chakra is stated to have been consecrated by Adi
shankaracharya during his visit to this place. There is an
exquisite sculpture of Panchamukha Ganesha here.
Kukke Subramanya
Kukke Subramanya is one of the beautiful and
religiously auspicious place, located amidst hills of western
ghats. Lord Subramanya is the deity worshiped in the form of a
Cobra in the temple of Kukke Subramanya.
Sringeri
Situated on the banks of Tungabhadra, was established
by Sri Adi Shankara in 9th Century A.D. It's famous for
Vidyashankara Temple and Sharada Temple . Sringeri was
discovered by Sri Sankaracharya as a place where even natural
animosities did not exist, as he saw a frog in labour
protected from the scorching rays of the sun by a raised hood
of a cobra. He installed at that place the Goddess of
learning, Sri Sharada.
Udupi
Udupi, 60 Kms from Mangalore, is where Madhwacharya,
the propounder of Dwaitha philosophy, lived and taught 700
years ago. Madhwacharya established the eight Sanyasi Mutts at
Udupi. According to legned, the statue of Sri Krishna in the
famous temple here is believed to have turned around to give
darshana to the kuruba devotee, Kanakadasa, who was not
allowed to enter the temple because Kanakadasa belonged to a
different caste. It is best known as the seat of Madhwa
renaissance, founded by the sage Madhwacharya, outcome of
which are Ashtamathas, located in the famous Car Street,
surrounding the Sri Krishna Temple. |
